Panama Sismo Tracker

Reading this tracker

• Color and size = magnitude. Grey is under M4, then turquoise (M4), yellow (M5), red (M6) and magenta (M7 and up). Bigger dots are stronger quakes.
• Filled dots come from the Instituto de Geociencias (IGC-UP). Rings come from the USGS. The largest quake in the current filter carries a label.
• Faded dots are in the older half of the selected time span: for example, older than 12 hours when viewing 24 h, or older than 1.5 hours when viewing 3 h. With 1 h selected nothing is faded, so you see everything from that hour. Untick the box above the map to show everything at full strength.
• A blue halo marks a quake that arrived in the last 20 minutes.
• Map layers (top right of the map): satellite imagery, dark or light street maps, place names, and tectonic plate boundaries. Solid white lines are subduction zones, where one plate dives under another; dashed white lines are the other plate boundaries.
• One set of filters drives everything. Catalog, time, magnitude and search apply to the counts, map, chart, list and comparison together. The magnitude tiles are filters too: click one to show only that magnitude, and click it again (or the total tile) to clear it. Dragging across the chart sets a custom time span.
• ES / EN at the top switches the language; alerts you turn on arrive in the language you were using.
• All times are Panama local time (UTC−5).

Magnitude

Magnitude measures the size of an earthquake at its source. The scale is logarithmic: each whole step means about 10 times more ground motion on a seismograph and about 32 times more energy.

So an M7.7 releases about 5.6 times the energy of an M7.2, which is why the two agencies' figures for the October 9 quake are not a small disagreement.

Why the IGC-UP and the USGS give different numbers

• ML (local magnitude, the original "Richter" idea) is measured from nearby stations. It works well for small and moderate quakes.
• mb (body-wave magnitude) uses the first waves to arrive at distant stations. It tends to underestimate large quakes, roughly above M6.
• Mw (moment magnitude, shown by the USGS as Mww) comes from the fault area, how far it slipped and the stiffness of the rock. It does not saturate, so it is preferred for large quakes.

Magnitude is not shaking

Intensity describes how strongly the ground shook at a particular place, on the Modified Mercalli scale (I to XII). One earthquake has one magnitude but many intensities: shaking is stronger closer to the epicenter, for shallow quakes, and on soft or filled ground.

Aftershocks

• They die down over time (Omori's law). The rate drops roughly in proportion to the time since the largest quake, so day 10 has about a tenth as many as day 1. After an M7, noticeable aftershocks can continue for weeks to months.
• Small ones vastly outnumber big ones (Gutenberg–Richter law). For each step down in magnitude there are about ten times as many quakes.
• The largest aftershock is usually about 1.2 magnitude units smaller than the mainshock (Båth's law). That is an average; sequences vary.
• Sometimes a bigger one follows. In roughly 1 in 20 sequences, a later quake turns out larger. The first one is only called the "mainshock" after the fact.
• Doublets are two quakes of similar size close together in time and place.

Strong aftershocks are dangerous because buildings already weakened by the mainshock can fail. Stay out of damaged structures.

Why Panama shakes

The isthmus sits on a small block of crust, the Panama plate (often called a microplate), wedged between the Caribbean plate to the north, the Cocos and Nazca plates in the Pacific, and the North Andes block to the east. Turn on Plate boundaries on the map to see them.

• South of Azuero and Coiba, the Nazca plate grinds past the Panama plate, mostly sideways (strike-slip) with some compression. This is the zone of the October 2026 sequence.
• The Panama Fracture Zone, a north–south set of faults west of Coiba near 82–83°W, separates the Cocos and Nazca plates and produces frequent quakes off Chiriquí.
• Toward Costa Rica, the Cocos plate dives under Central America (a subduction zone, the solid line on the map). Much of the background activity near Puerto Armuelles, Boquete and Changuinola comes from here.
• On the Caribbean side, the North Panama Deformed Belt absorbs compression from the Caribbean plate.
• Toward Colombia and Darién, the Panama plate meets the North Andes block, and the Nazca plate dives under South America.

Historical earthquakes

Panama and its neighbors have a long record of damaging earthquakes. The map shows earthquakes from 1746 to 2025 in and around Panama: every quake in NOAA's database of significant earthquakes (those that caused deaths, damage or a tsunami, or were very large) and every quake of magnitude 6 or more that the USGS has catalogued since 1900. The October 2026 quake is marked in blue.

Notable earthquakes in Panama

• 1882, September 7, San Blas (Guna Yala) coast. The largest in the record, estimated at about magnitude 8 from historical accounts (NOAA lists 8.3). It caused severe damage and a tsunami on the Caribbean coast; NOAA estimates 101 to 1,000 deaths.
• 1913, October 2, Azuero Peninsula. Magnitude 6.6, in the same region as the 2026 sequence. NOAA records limited damage and an estimated 1 to 50 deaths.
• 1934, July 18, off Burica and Puerto Armuelles. Magnitude 7.5 with a tsunami, followed by quakes of magnitude 6.6 to 6.8 the same day and on July 21.
• 1974 and 1976, Darién. A magnitude 7.3 quake near the Colombian border in 1974, with 11 deaths and 50 homes destroyed recorded; in July 1976, two quakes of magnitude 6.7 and 7.0 off Jaqué, with 5 deaths recorded.
• 1991, April 22, Limón, Costa Rica. Magnitude 7.6, with 90 deaths, extreme damage and a tsunami. It also caused heavy damage in Bocas del Toro.
• 2003, December 25, Puerto Armuelles. Magnitude 6.5, with 2 deaths and 75 injured.

Reading the historical map

Older entries are estimates: before about 1900, magnitudes come from damage reports and locations can be off by tens of kilometers. The USGS list covers only magnitude 6 and up since 1900, and NOAA's list only significant quakes, so many smaller quakes are missing. The area shown also takes in parts of Costa Rica and Colombia, whose quakes have shaken Panama too.

How fast the shaking travels

Seismic waves cross Panama's crust at a few kilometres per second. The first jolt (P wave) travels at about 6 km/s; the stronger shaking (S wave) at about 3.6 km/s; the slow rolling waves at about 3 km/s.

Rule of thumb: count the seconds between the first jolt and the strong shaking and multiply by about 8.6 km to estimate your distance from the epicenter.

Tsunami warning signs

• strong shaking, or shaking that lasts a long time, while you are near the coast
• the sea suddenly pulling back and exposing the seafloor, or rising fast
• a loud roar coming from the ocean

If you notice any of these, move inland or to high ground right away, on foot if you can. Do not wait for an official alert and do not go to the shore to watch. Tsunamis come in several waves over hours; the first is often not the largest.

What to do

During the shaking

• Drop, Cover, Hold On. Get down, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
• Do not run outside while the ground is shaking; most injuries come from falling objects.
• Outdoors, move away from buildings, trees, walls and power lines. Driving, pull over away from bridges and stay in the vehicle.

After the shaking

• Expect aftershocks. Check for injuries; in Panama call 911 for emergencies.
• If you smell gas, open windows, leave, and don't use flames or switches. Don't go back into damaged buildings.
• Send text messages instead of calling, and follow SINAPROC for instructions.

Be ready

• Keep water (about 4 liters per person per day, for at least 3 days), food, a flashlight, a radio, first aid, medicines, document copies, cash and a charger.
• Secure heavy furniture to the walls and agree on a family meeting point.

Data and resources

• IGC-UP: the Instituto de Geociencias, Universidad de Panamá, publishes the quakes it locates over the last 7 days at sismosgeociencias.up.ac.pa. Preliminary entries are automatic and change often; Reviewed ones have been checked by an analyst.
• USGS: the U.S. Geological Survey's global catalog, which for this region mostly lists quakes of about M4.5 and up.
• How it updates: on the website, an always-on checker asks the IGC-UP every 10 seconds whether its list changed and reads the USGS catalog every minute; an open page receives each change the moment it's found. No AI service is involved.
• How fast the agencies publish: the IGC-UP usually posts a quake within a few minutes, as a preliminary (automatic) location. The USGS often takes 15 minutes to several hours for quakes in this region, and lists mainly M4 and up. Neither is an early warning: by the time a quake is posted, its shaking is over.
• Alerts: on the website, Turn on alerts sends a notification to that phone or computer when a new quake reaches the magnitude you chose, even when the page is closed, usually within a minute of the agencies publishing it. If an agency later raises a quake's magnitude past your choice, you get a second, revised alert. On iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.4 or later), add the site to your Home Screen first and turn alerts on from there. Alerts depend on the agencies' own reporting delays and are not an early warning system.
• Matching: an IGC-UP entry and a USGS entry count as the same quake when their times are less than 20 seconds apart and their epicenters less than 100 km apart.
• Historical earthquakes: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Global Significant Earthquake Database (doi:10.7289/V5TD9V7K), and the USGS ANSS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat).

What the website records

• Visits. When your browser connects to the live data, the site records your IP address, the approximate location Cloudflare derives from it (country, region and city), your network provider, your browser's identification text (user agent), and the time of your first and last visit and how many times you connected.
• Alerts, only if you turn them on: the push address your browser creates for this site, the magnitude and the language you chose.
• On your device only: your filters, language and whether you've seen the privacy notice are kept in your browser's storage and are never sent to the site.

Why

• To keep the service secure and stop abuse, such as someone flooding it with requests.
• To count how many people use the tracker and from where.
• To send the alerts you asked for.

Your data is not sold, shared or used for advertising, and it is not used to identify you.

How long it is kept

• Each IP address and its details are deleted automatically 7 days after your last visit.
• Daily totals of visits per country, which contain no IP addresses, are kept for one year.
• Alert data is deleted when you turn alerts off, or when your browser withdraws the push address.

Who can see it

Only the site's administrator, Figmental Group, through a password-protected page. The site runs on Cloudflare, which handles the requests as the hosting provider.

You can ask for access to, correction or deletion of your data, or object to its use (the ARCO rights, plus portability, under Law 81 of 2019) by contacting us through www.figmentalgroup.com. Using the site after seeing the notice at the top means you accept this processing; if you don't, please don't use the site.

Glossary

Aftershock

A smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same area.

Båth's law

On average, the largest aftershock is about 1.2 magnitude units smaller than the mainshock.

Body-wave magnitude (mb)

A magnitude from the first waves recorded at distant stations. It underestimates large earthquakes.

Depth

How far below the surface the rupture started. Shallow quakes shake the surface more strongly near the epicenter.

Doublet

Two earthquakes of similar size close together in time and place.

Epicenter

The point on the surface directly above where the earthquake started.

Fault

A fracture in the crust along which the rocks on either side have moved.

Foreshock

A smaller earthquake before a larger one in the same place, recognized only after the larger one happens.

Gutenberg–Richter law

For each step down in magnitude, there are about ten times as many earthquakes.

Hypocenter (focus)

The point underground where the rupture began.

Intensity

How strongly the ground shook at a given place (Modified Mercalli scale, I to XII). Not the same as magnitude.

Local magnitude (ML)

A magnitude from nearby stations, the modern form of Richter's original scale.

Magnitude

The size of an earthquake at its source, on a logarithmic scale.

Mainshock

The largest earthquake in a sequence.

Microplate

A small tectonic plate, such as the Panama plate under the isthmus.

Moment magnitude (Mw, Mww)

A magnitude calculated from the fault area, slip and rock stiffness; the standard for large quakes.

Omori's law

Aftershocks become less frequent roughly in proportion to the time since the mainshock.

P wave / S wave

The first, faster compressional wave and the slower, stronger shear wave of an earthquake.

Preliminary / Automatic

An event located by computer and not yet checked by an analyst. It may change or be removed.

Reviewed

An event an analyst has checked.

Strike-slip

A fault where the two sides move sideways past each other.

Subduction

When one plate slides beneath another, as the Cocos plate does under Central America.

Tsunami

A series of sea waves caused by a sudden movement of the seafloor, usually from a large, shallow undersea earthquake.

No terms match that filter.

Cómo leer el tracker

• Color y tamaño = magnitud. Gris es menor de M4, luego turquesa (M4), amarillo (M5), rojo (M6) y magenta (M7 o más). Los puntos más grandes son sismos más fuertes.
• Los puntos rellenos vienen del Instituto de Geociencias (IGC-UP). Los anillos vienen del USGS. El sismo mayor del filtro actual lleva una etiqueta.
• Los puntos atenuados están en la mitad más antigua del lapso elegido: por ejemplo, de hace más de 12 horas al ver 24 h, o de hace más de 1.5 horas al ver 3 h. Con 1 h no se atenúa nada, así que ves todo lo de esa hora. Desmarca la casilla sobre el mapa para verlos todos con la misma intensidad.
• Un halo azul marca un sismo que llegó en los últimos 20 minutos.
• Capas del mapa (arriba a la derecha del mapa): imagen satelital, mapas oscuro o claro, nombres de lugares y límites de placas tectónicas. Las líneas blancas continuas son zonas de subducción, donde una placa se hunde bajo otra; las líneas blancas punteadas son los demás límites de placas.
• Un solo conjunto de filtros controla todo. Catálogo, tiempo, magnitud y búsqueda se aplican a la vez a los conteos, el mapa, la gráfica, la lista y la comparación. Las fichas de magnitud también son filtros: haz clic en una para ver solo esa magnitud y otra vez (o en la ficha del total) para quitarlo. Arrastrar sobre la gráfica fija un lapso personalizado.
• ES / EN arriba cambia el idioma; las alertas que actives llegan en el idioma que estabas usando.
• Todas las horas están en hora local de Panamá (UTC−5).

Magnitud

La magnitud mide el tamaño de un sismo en su origen. La escala es logarítmica: cada paso entero significa unas 10 veces más movimiento del suelo en un sismógrafo y unas 32 veces más energía.

Así, un M7.7 libera unas 5.6 veces la energía de un M7.2; por eso las cifras de las dos agencias para el sismo del 9 de octubre no son una diferencia pequeña.

Por qué el IGC-UP y el USGS dan cifras distintas

• ML (magnitud local, la idea original de "Richter") se mide con estaciones cercanas. Funciona bien para sismos pequeños y moderados.
• mb (magnitud de ondas de cuerpo) usa las primeras ondas que llegan a estaciones lejanas. Tiende a subestimar los sismos grandes, aproximadamente por encima de M6.
• Mw (magnitud de momento, que el USGS muestra como Mww) se calcula con el área de la falla, cuánto se deslizó y la rigidez de la roca. No se satura, por eso se prefiere para sismos grandes.

Magnitud no es sacudida

La intensidad describe qué tan fuerte se sacudió el suelo en un lugar, en la escala de Mercalli Modificada (I a XII). Un sismo tiene una sola magnitud pero muchas intensidades: la sacudida es más fuerte cerca del epicentro, en sismos superficiales y en suelos blandos o de relleno.

Réplicas

• Disminuyen con el tiempo (ley de Omori). La frecuencia baja aproximadamente en proporción al tiempo desde el sismo mayor, así que el día 10 tiene cerca de una décima parte de las del día 1. Después de un M7, las réplicas perceptibles pueden seguir durante semanas o meses.
• Las pequeñas superan por mucho a las grandes (ley de Gutenberg-Richter). Por cada paso hacia abajo en magnitud hay unas diez veces más sismos.
• La réplica mayor suele ser unas 1.2 unidades de magnitud menor que el sismo principal (ley de Båth). Es un promedio; las secuencias varían.
• A veces viene uno mayor. En aproximadamente 1 de cada 20 secuencias, un sismo posterior resulta más grande. Al primero solo se le llama "sismo principal" después.
• Los dobletes son dos sismos de tamaño similar cercanos en tiempo y lugar.

Las réplicas fuertes son peligrosas porque los edificios ya debilitados por el sismo principal pueden colapsar. Mantente fuera de estructuras dañadas.

Por qué tiembla en Panamá

El istmo está sobre un pequeño bloque de corteza, la placa de Panamá (a menudo llamada microplaca), encajada entre la placa del Caribe al norte, las placas de Cocos y Nazca en el Pacífico y el bloque de los Andes del Norte al este. Activa Límites de placas en el mapa para verlos.

• Al sur de Azuero y Coiba, la placa de Nazca se desliza junto a la placa de Panamá, mayormente de lado (desplazamiento de rumbo) con algo de compresión. Esta es la zona de la secuencia de octubre de 2026.
• La Zona de Fractura de Panamá, un conjunto de fallas de norte a sur al oeste de Coiba, cerca de los 82–83°O, separa las placas de Cocos y Nazca y produce sismos frecuentes frente a Chiriquí.
• Hacia Costa Rica, la placa de Cocos se hunde bajo Centroamérica (una zona de subducción, la línea continua en el mapa). Gran parte de la actividad de fondo cerca de Puerto Armuelles, Boquete y Changuinola viene de aquí.
• En el lado del Caribe, el Cinturón Deformado del Norte de Panamá absorbe la compresión de la placa del Caribe.
• Hacia Colombia y Darién, la placa de Panamá se encuentra con el bloque de los Andes del Norte, y la placa de Nazca se hunde bajo Sudamérica.

Sismos históricos

Panamá y sus vecinos tienen un largo historial de sismos dañinos. El mapa muestra los sismos de 1746 a 2025 en Panamá y sus alrededores: todos los de la base de datos de sismos significativos de NOAA (los que causaron muertes, daños o un tsunami, o fueron muy grandes) y todos los de magnitud 6 o más que el USGS ha catalogado desde 1900. El sismo de octubre de 2026 está marcado en azul.

Sismos notables en Panamá

• 1882, 7 de septiembre, costa de San Blas (Guna Yala). El mayor del registro, estimado en cerca de magnitud 8 a partir de relatos históricos (NOAA indica 8.3). Causó daños graves y un tsunami en la costa caribeña; NOAA estima entre 101 y 1,000 muertes.
• 1913, 2 de octubre, península de Azuero. Magnitud 6.6, en la misma región que la secuencia de 2026. NOAA registra daños limitados y entre 1 y 50 muertes estimadas.
• 1934, 18 de julio, frente a Burica y Puerto Armuelles. Magnitud 7.5 con tsunami, seguido de sismos de magnitud 6.6 a 6.8 el mismo día y el 21 de julio.
• 1974 y 1976, Darién. Un sismo de magnitud 7.3 cerca de la frontera con Colombia en 1974, con 11 muertes y 50 viviendas destruidas registradas; en julio de 1976, dos sismos de magnitud 6.7 y 7.0 frente a Jaqué, con 5 muertes registradas.
• 1991, 22 de abril, Limón, Costa Rica. Magnitud 7.6, con 90 muertes, daños extremos y tsunami. También causó daños fuertes en Bocas del Toro.
• 2003, 25 de diciembre, Puerto Armuelles. Magnitud 6.5, con 2 muertes y 75 heridos.

Cómo leer el mapa histórico

Los registros antiguos son estimaciones: antes de 1900, las magnitudes vienen de reportes de daños y las ubicaciones pueden variar decenas de kilómetros. La lista del USGS cubre solo magnitud 6 o más desde 1900, y la de NOAA solo sismos significativos, así que faltan muchos sismos menores. El área también incluye partes de Costa Rica y Colombia, cuyos sismos también se han sentido en Panamá.

Qué tan rápido viaja el temblor

Las ondas sísmicas cruzan la corteza de Panamá a unos pocos kilómetros por segundo. La primera sacudida (onda P) viaja a unos 6 km/s; la sacudida fuerte (onda S), a unos 3.6 km/s; las ondas lentas y ondulantes, a unos 3 km/s.

Regla práctica: cuenta los segundos entre la primera sacudida y la sacudida fuerte y multiplica por unos 8.6 km para estimar tu distancia al epicentro.

Señales de tsunami

• sacudida fuerte, o que dura mucho tiempo, mientras estás cerca de la costa
• el mar se retira de repente y deja el fondo al descubierto, o sube rápido
• un rugido fuerte que viene del océano

Si notas cualquiera de estas señales, aléjate tierra adentro o a un lugar alto de inmediato, a pie si puedes. No esperes una alerta oficial ni vayas a la orilla a mirar. Los tsunamis llegan en varias olas durante horas; la primera a menudo no es la mayor.

Qué hacer

Durante la sacudida

• Agáchate, cúbrete y sujétate. Ponte en el suelo, cúbrete bajo una mesa resistente y sujétate hasta que pare la sacudida.
• No salgas corriendo mientras el suelo se mueve; la mayoría de las lesiones vienen de objetos que caen.
• Al aire libre, aléjate de edificios, árboles, muros y cables eléctricos. Si vas manejando, detente lejos de puentes y quédate en el vehículo.

Después de la sacudida

• Espera réplicas. Revisa si hay heridos; en Panamá llama al 911 para emergencias.
• Si hueles gas, abre las ventanas, sal y no uses llamas ni interruptores. No vuelvas a entrar a edificios dañados.
• Envía mensajes de texto en vez de llamar y sigue a SINAPROC para recibir instrucciones.

Estar preparado

• Ten agua (unos 4 litros por persona por día, para al menos 3 días), comida, linterna, radio, botiquín, medicinas, copias de documentos, efectivo y un cargador.
• Asegura los muebles pesados a la pared y acuerda un punto de encuentro familiar.

Datos y recursos

• IGC-UP: el Instituto de Geociencias de la Universidad de Panamá publica los sismos que localiza en los últimos 7 días en sismosgeociencias.up.ac.pa. Las entradas preliminares son automáticas y cambian a menudo; las revisadas ya las verificó un analista.
• USGS: el catálogo mundial del Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos, que para esta región incluye sobre todo sismos de M4.5 en adelante.
• Cómo se actualiza: en el sitio web, un verificador siempre activo le pregunta al IGC-UP cada 10 segundos si su lista cambió y lee el catálogo del USGS cada minuto; una página abierta recibe cada cambio en cuanto se detecta. No interviene ningún servicio de IA.
• Qué tan rápido publican las agencias: el IGC-UP suele publicar un sismo en pocos minutos, como localización preliminar (automática). El USGS a menudo tarda de 15 minutos a varias horas en sismos de esta región, y registra sobre todo M4 en adelante. Ninguno es una alerta temprana: cuando un sismo se publica, su sacudida ya pasó.
• Alertas: en el sitio web, Activar alertas envía una notificación a ese teléfono o computadora cuando un sismo nuevo alcanza la magnitud que elegiste, incluso con la página cerrada, normalmente menos de un minuto después de que las agencias lo publican. Si una agencia luego sube la magnitud de un sismo por encima de tu elección, recibes una segunda alerta revisada. En iPhone y iPad (iOS 16.4 o posterior), agrega primero el sitio a tu pantalla de inicio y activa las alertas desde ahí. Las alertas dependen de los tiempos de publicación de las agencias y no son un sistema de alerta temprana.
• Coincidencias: una entrada del IGC-UP y una del USGS cuentan como el mismo sismo cuando sus horas difieren menos de 20 segundos y sus epicentros están a menos de 100 km.
• Sismos históricos: Base de Datos Mundial de Sismos Significativos de NOAA, National Centers for Environmental Information (doi:10.7289/V5TD9V7K), y el Catálogo Integral ANSS del USGS (ComCat).

Qué registra el sitio web

• Visitas. Cuando tu navegador se conecta a los datos en vivo, el sitio registra tu dirección IP, la ubicación aproximada que Cloudflare calcula a partir de ella (país, región y ciudad), tu proveedor de internet, el texto de identificación de tu navegador (user agent), y la hora de tu primera y última visita y cuántas veces te conectaste.
• Alertas, solo si las activas: la dirección de notificaciones que tu navegador crea para este sitio, la magnitud y el idioma que elegiste.

Cuánto tiempo se guardan

• Cada dirección IP y sus detalles se borran automáticamente 7 días después de tu última visita.
• Los totales diarios de visitas por país, que no contienen direcciones IP, se guardan un año.
• Los datos de alertas se borran cuando desactivas las alertas o cuando tu navegador retira la dirección de notificaciones.

Quién puede verlos

Solo el administrador del sitio, Figmental Group, mediante una página protegida con contraseña. El sitio funciona en Cloudflare, que procesa las solicitudes como proveedor de alojamiento.

Tus derechos

Desplazamiento de rumbo

Una falla donde los dos lados se mueven de lado, uno junto al otro.

Doblete

Dos sismos de tamaño similar cercanos en tiempo y lugar.

Epicentro

El punto de la superficie justo encima de donde empezó el sismo.

Falla

Una fractura en la corteza a lo largo de la cual se han movido las rocas de cada lado.

Hipocentro (foco)

El punto bajo tierra donde empezó la ruptura.

Intensidad

Qué tan fuerte se sacudió el suelo en un lugar dado (escala de Mercalli Modificada, I a XII). No es lo mismo que la magnitud.

Ley de Båth

En promedio, la réplica mayor es unas 1.2 unidades de magnitud menor que el sismo principal.

Ley de Gutenberg-Richter

Por cada paso hacia abajo en magnitud, hay unas diez veces más sismos.

Ley de Omori

Las réplicas se vuelven menos frecuentes aproximadamente en proporción al tiempo desde el sismo principal.

Magnitud

El tamaño de un sismo en su origen, en una escala logarítmica.

Magnitud de momento (Mw, Mww)

Una magnitud calculada con el área de la falla, el deslizamiento y la rigidez de la roca; el estándar para sismos grandes.

Magnitud de ondas de cuerpo (mb)

Una magnitud calculada con las primeras ondas registradas en estaciones lejanas. Subestima los sismos grandes.

Magnitud local (ML)

Una magnitud calculada con estaciones cercanas, la forma moderna de la escala original de Richter.

Microplaca

Una placa tectónica pequeña, como la placa de Panamá bajo el istmo.

Onda P / onda S

La primera onda de un sismo, de compresión y más rápida, y la onda de corte, más lenta y fuerte.

Preliminar / automático

Un evento localizado por computadora y aún no verificado por un analista. Puede cambiar o eliminarse.

Profundidad

Qué tan abajo de la superficie empezó la ruptura. Los sismos superficiales sacuden con más fuerza la superficie cerca del epicentro.

Réplica

Un sismo más pequeño que sigue a uno mayor en la misma zona.

Revisado

Un evento que un analista ya verificó.

Sismo precursor

Un sismo menor antes de uno mayor en el mismo lugar; solo se reconoce después de que ocurre el mayor.

Sismo principal

El sismo mayor de una secuencia.

Subducción

Cuando una placa se desliza por debajo de otra, como la placa de Cocos bajo Centroamérica.

Tsunami

Una serie de olas causadas por un movimiento repentino del fondo marino, normalmente por un sismo grande y superficial bajo el mar.
